Girl killed while riding a bike in Tauranga

A five-year-old was killed after being hit by a car while riding a bike in Tauranga.

The incident happened Matapihi Rd in Mount Maunganui on Saturda. Emergency services were called at around 1pm.

Reports said that the girl was riding her pink bike out of Waikare Rd onto Matapihi Rd. According to police, the young girl was struch by a 4×4 utility vehicle while she was riding her push bike. She died at the scene.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said that there were no other adult with the girl at the time of the accident. “There was another child [an eight-year-old girl] with the deceased,” he told reporters.

The driver of the 4×4 reportedly attempted to help the girl after the accident. He is currently cooperating with police with the investigation.

“It’s a very sad day,” said one neighbour.

The girl’s aunt, who does not want to be named, said that the girl’s parents are devastated. “They’re not good, I was just with them,” she said.

“They were going to the school to play,” she said. “She only just started coming out of her house, riding out of her house.”

Matapihi Road were closed for several hours. Interviews and investigations are ongoing.
