A car crash that happened in Kaitoke near Whanganui. claimed the lives of two people, including a pregnant woman.

According to reports, 20-year old Emily Hurley was the one driving the car when it collided head-on with another car headed south.

Stuff reported that emergency services were called to the scene in Kaitoke–between Pauri Rd and Marangai Rd–at around 4:55am.

The driver of the other car, 47-year-old Albert Noel Burns, was also killed in the accident. It has not yet been revealed what exactly caused the crash, but police are currently doing investigations. The deaths have been referred to the coroner.

The passengers of the car that Ms Hurley was driving survived the crash. They got trapped in one of the cars, and rescuers needed to use hydraulic cutting equipment to get them out.

According to Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter base manager Chris Moody, the aircraft picked up a Whanganui man from the scene. He was reportedly in his 20s.

“We didn’t shut down at the scene, we just kept our rotors turning,” said Moody. “They had the patient ready to go minutes after we arrived. We were on the ground for possibly 10 minutes.”

The man was brought to Palmerston North Hospital and is now in a stable condition.
