An armed thief has stolen $20,000 worth of jewellery from a jeweller at a west Auckland mall.
The Lotus Gold Jewellery shop, located in Lynn Mall, reportedly lost 22 karat gold of jewels after a man stormed the doors and told the staff to get down on the floor.
The robbery happened at around 10:30am on Tuesday. The man told the staff that he was carrying a weapon, which was covered in cloth.
“He used a screwdriver to wrench open the jewellery cabinets, putting handfuls of necklaces, bangles and bracelets into his bag,” said Murray Broadmore, the store’s general manager.
The man is being described as Maori or Polynesian. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a short-sleeved hoodies over a white long-sleeved shirt.

After about five minutes, the man exited the store and was tackled by a bystander, and then a security guard. Around $50,000 worth of jewellery was recovered, but the man reportedly still had $200,000 worth of items with him.
“We seek [members of the public] assistance in helping identify the offender and get him arrested as soon as possible before he targets anyone else,” store manager Pravin Kumar told reporters.
Mr Kumar also said that gold buyers should call police if they are approached by someone who selling 22-karat Indian gold jewellery, similar to what is shown in this video.
